Bathukamma is a Hindu festival celebrated by the people of Telangana or Mostly Telugu speaking Population. Bathukamma is celebrated as per Telugu version of Hindu calendar in the Bhadrapada Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya, usually in September–October of Gregorian calendar. Mahalaya is an auspicious occasion observed seven days before the Durga Puja, and heralds the advent of Durga, the goddess of supreme power.

Bathukamma is observed for nine days during Navratri. It starts on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya and the 9-day festivities will culminate on “Saddula Bathukamma” or “Pedda Bathukamma” festival on Ashwayuja Ashtami, popularly known as Durgashtami which is two days before Dussehra.

Bathukamma represents Very Rich cultural spirit of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

In Telugu, ‘Bathukamma’ means ‘Mother Goddess come Alive’ and Goddess Durga or Yog Maya or Maha Gauri-‘Life Giver’ is worshipped in the form of Bathukamma. This is the one festival which connects Whole India despite different names as per region.

 

How Women Celebrate Bathukamma?

 

Bathukamma is the festival for feminine felicitation. On this Auspicious occasion women dress up in the traditional sari combining it with jewels and other accessories. Teenage Girls(Unmarried) wear Langa-Oni/Half-Sarees/Lehenga Choli combining it with jewels in order to bring out the traditional grace of the attire.
